Sankalpa Voluntary Organization was established in the year 2010 by a team of Doctors, well knowledge about the social activists who were very much interested in Social work and also parents of Thalassemia disease children. We are the only NGO who works for the Thalassemia disease and Sickle cell Anemia in our Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapeta, Mohaboobabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem Districts and beside the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. Sankalpa is a Voluntary Organization dedicated to the cause of Thalassemia free society and also providing treatment, medicine (Iron Chelation tablets), Blood, Blood transfusion with free of cost these children since 2010. We, at Sankalpa Voluntary Organization are very much moved by the plight of children suffering from thalassemia disease. The treatment of Thalassemia disease is very costly and these poor children cannot afford the treatment. As a result they are losing their lives. In our Telangana State, thousands of children are affected these diseases.
What is Thalassemia
Thalassemia is a dreaded disease that afflicts millions of children around the world. There are hundreds and thousands of children suffering from thalassemia & sickle cell disease, especially in rural and tribal areas of Telangana State.
Thalassemia is a Genetic Blood disorder where people do not have sufficient hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is found in red blood cells and it carries oxygen to all parts of the body. When enough oxygen is not supplied to all parts of the body, people suffer from anemia and other malfunctions sometimes leading to life-threatening issues. There are two primary types of Thalassemia disease. One is Alpha Thalassemia and the other is Beta Thalassemia or Cooley's Anemia. Beta Thalassemia Major is a serious illness.
Symptoms of Thalassemia
The symptoms of thalassemia depend on the type of thalassemia and its severity. Some of the most common symptoms are bone deformities, especially in the face, delayed growth and development, dark urine, lack of appetite, excessive tiredness and irritation, yellow or pale skin. These symptoms make patients weak and as such they cannot support themselves physically and had to depend on others.
Treatment for Thalassemia
The treatment for thalassemia includes blood transfusions, bone marrow transplant, medications and supplements, and possible surgery to remove spleen or gallbladder. Since thalassemia patients cannot produce Red Blood Cells in their body, they need regular blood transfusions every 15 to 20 days throughout their life span. But regular blood transfusions lead to the increase of iron levels in their body, which eventually damages their liver, kidney, heart and mainly spleen. If these organs are damaged, they have to undergo treatment or surgery for these too. For example, if spleen is damaged, they have to undergo spleenectomy surgery. And all these surgeries and treatments are too costly and not within the reach of these poor patients.
The Role of Sankalpa
It is here Sankalpa steps in providing Blood, Treatment and Medications to these patients with free of cost. Sankalpa has noticed an over 350+ thalassemia patients in Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem districts of Telangana. Of these, we have taken in 268 patients under our wings providing them the necessary requisite treatment like free medical treatment, free regular checkups, free blood transfusions and free medicines to these children. Besides treatment, Sankalpa is also providing food, clothes, education etc. Bringing smiles and cheers and good health to these children is the primary motto of Sankalpa.
Sankalpa is also involved in educating people about the dreaded Thalassemia & Sickle cell diseases and spreading awareness among the people of Telangana, especially in rural and tribal areas through various programs and events. We, at Sankalpa, also organize blood donation camps at regular intervals highlighting the noble causes of blood donation and how it helps save millions of lives.
Highlights of Our Awareness Programs
Our awareness programs focus on eradicating thalassemia and sickle cell diseases from the midst of these rural and tribal people living in Khammam, Bhadradri and Kothagudem. These diseases are more prevalent among these people as they marry within their own family blood relations. Marriages between their kith and kin are common phenomena. They claim that it is their culture. This mythical culture is what Sankalpa is trying to destroy through its awareness programs. We are confident that we totally eradicate thalassemia and sickle cell diseases from the midst of these rural and tribal people living in Khammam, Bhadradri and Kothagudem.
Our Awareness Programs in a Nutshell
Our awareness programs are educating these people about the dangers inherent in marriagesamongst their own kith and kin and within the blood relations. How such marriages within blood- relations produce thalassemia and sickle cell Anemia disease-prone children. Our awareness programs include counseling by medical experts, qualified doctors, rural musical presentations like hari katha and burra katha, street skits and dramas. Such programs are arranged frequently and along with blood donation camps. Each of our awareness programs leaving a deep impact on these people; discouraging marriages within their own blood-relation families and slowly destroying their cultural myth. Thus we are able to bring in radical changes in these communities concerning their health and also conducting Rallies.
All these activities require huge funds in cash. Cash crunch is the biggest hindrance that Sankalpa suffers from in its services to the poor patients of thalassemia and sickle cell. Yet with steely resolve we are marching ahead in the fond hope that we overcome this cash crunch and other hindrances through your donations. 182 patients is not our limit. Sankalpa has decided to take in more patients. But our hands are badly tied down financially. For this we need your support and funds.
Our Expenditure Estimations
The rising high costs of medicines, surgeries, awareness programs, blood donation camps and other related activities have hit us badly. For instance, the medical expenditure on each patient being incurred is around Rs.8,000 to Rs.10,000 per month. And we have 188 patients. And the cost comes to roughly Rs.18,20,000 per month. Apart from this, our awareness programs and blood donation camps are also costing us a lot. For each of such camps, the expenditure comes to Rs. 4,000 to Rs.5,000/-. And in a month, we conduct four or five times the awareness programs and blood donation camps. Put together, our monthly expenditure roughly comes to Rs.20,00,000 per month.
In view of these huge commitments and noble efforts in eradicating thalassemia and sickle cell diseases in Khammam, Bhadradri and Kothagudem, we request the noble souls to donate generously to Sankalpa Voluntary Organization and help us achieve our noble goals in totally eradicating thalassemia and sickle cell diseases.
Your Support to Sankalpa Go a Long Way
Your support in cash and kind go a long way in accomplishing our mission; that of eradicating thalassemia and sickle cell Anemia diseases. We know it's a gigantic task. But we are undeterred and with steely resolve we aim to achieve our goals and objectives of Sankalpa. We have decided to
bring in qualitative changes in the lives of these poor Thalassemia and Sickle cell patients. Our Aim is to make these patients stand on their own legs despite their handicap. Our aim is to bring smiles and cheers in the families of these poor patients including them.
