Thalassemia is a group of genetic blood disorders that affect the production of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to various parts of the body. Hemoglobin is composed of two main protein chains: alpha and beta. Thalassemia results from mutations in the genes responsible for producing these protein chains.
